Abstract

This round table discussion will place the research experiences of sports historians and sociologists side-by-side, specifically those about the relationships between football fans and the phenomena of politicization, whether they discuss the ideological adhesion to macro-social themes or pragmatic collective claims related to architectural and behavioral changes occurring in the spectators of the elite contemporary professional football. Initially focused on discussing the changes of European football, the epicenter of commercial and corporate changes through which spectacular sports practice is going, this Roundtable Discussion seeks to expand such scope and create an analysis environment that enables large-scale comparisons. We will thus seek to understand how supporters from the discussed countries – Brazil, Costa Rica, Poland and Switzerland – articulate their positions when facing the managerial and financial changes of contemporary football, seeking to understand the stance taken by supporters in relation to other sports characters – clubs, federations, political authorities and state organizations; thus highlighting which types of relationships the leaderships of supporters' groups establish with these characters.
