Abstract
Identity and Urban Space
The identity of individuals and groups have been in the focus of historical research for some time. Particularly urban studies have made clear, that the European cities and towns are the product of a socially formed agreement, which is shaped by communal practices and which aims at collective values and principles. Urban identity is characterized by solidarity and political, social as well as cultural cohesion within the community, and at the same time by establishing borders against the outer world.
